Some spent their entire time debunking supposed hauntings, others used their specialist knowledge or even psychic gifts to deal with &#8216;real&#8217; supernatural phenomena.<\/p>\n<p>And there was no one career route for the investigators and experts being consulted &#8211; no Certificate in Occult Detecting. Just a few of the historical literary characters and their imaginative\u00a0 &#8216;professions&#8217; include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>medical philosopher (<strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Dr Hesselius<\/span><\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li>occult psychologist (<strong>Flaxman Low<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li>ghost seer (<strong>Aylmer Vance<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li>ghost finder (<strong>Thomas Carnacki<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li>exposer of ghosts (<strong>John Bell<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li>mystic <strong>(Simon Iff<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li>psychic doctor (<strong>John Silence<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li>mental healer (<strong>Dr Xavier Wycherley<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li>dream detective (<strong>Moris Klaw<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li>psychic (<strong>Norton Vyse<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li>psychic detective (<strong>Shiela Crerar<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li>surgeon of souls (<strong>Dr Ivan Brodsky<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li>ghost hunter (<strong>Jack Hargreaves<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li>occult detector (<strong>Semi Dual<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Notably, almost all of these protagonists were male!<\/p>\n<p>Similar characters did occasionally surface between and through two World Wars, notably <strong>Jules de Grandin<\/strong> (by Seabury Quinn) who was popular in the pages of Weird Tales, but the \u2018Golden Age\u2019 was passing and society had changed. From the nineteen fifties onward came a burst of noir and grittier approaches \u2014 the PIs and harassed cops, the newspapermen like <strong>Kolchak<\/strong>, more in keeping with the second half of the century. The borderlands may be there, and slowly encroaching as much in a Nairobi high-rise as in a Victorian mansion, in a Siberian shaman\u2019s community as much as in a New York brownstone. Already ODM has published stories set in \u2014 and with protagonists from \u2014 Japan, Australia, African countries, India, and more.
