More October bookerations today, dear listener. A quick note on a new novel by Willie Meikle<\/strong><\/span>, a guest review of a themed anthology, Welcome to the Show<\/em>, complied by Matt Hayward<\/strong><\/span> and edited by Doug Murano<\/strong><\/span>, and a mention of another anthology on the wind from Planet X Publications – <\/strong>which also concerns a show, the classic US carnival.<\/p>\n

Right, there are always far more interesting books than we can cover. So in addition to our usual wittering, articles and oddities, we\u2019re going to include more guest reviews. We\u2019ll still be doing our own thing, poking our cold wet noses into other people\u2019s work and exploring, of course. We\u2019re going for this approach because one of the biggest problems for small and independent presses (and their authors) is getting their works noticed at all.<\/p>\n

The guest reviews will be clearly marked and attributed, just in case you get confused. Any opinions expressed in those sections belong to the reviewers, not us – our tastes are a bit peculiar, and we\u2019ll make our own recommendations as we bumble along. This might also leave us more time to go back to lurchers and classic weird things!<\/p>\n

What we ourselves are reading, by the way \u2013 about fifteen books at once, but Tade Thompson\u2019s<\/span><\/strong> recent novel Rosewater<\/em> is absolutely cracking and it looks like we\u2019ll be recommending that one highly. First speculative novel we\u2019ve read recently that was also a complete page-turner.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re also interested in Haunted are These Houses<\/em> (from Unnerving), short stories and poetry with Gemma Files<\/strong><\/span> and others; Trade Yer Coffin for a Gun<\/em> by Mer Whinery<\/strong><\/span> (from Muzzleland), Entranced by Eyes of Evil<\/em>, edited by Tim Prasil<\/strong><\/span> (Brom Bones Books) and many more. We will try to report back.<\/p>\n

The Green and the Black<\/h1>\n

Firstly, released this week we find Willie Meikle\u2019s<\/strong> latest novel The Green and the Black<\/em>, published by Crossroad Press.<\/p>\n

\u201cA small group of industrial archaeologists head into the centre of Newfoundland, investigating a rumour of a lost prospecting team of Irish miners in the late Nineteenth century. They find the remains of a mining operation, and a journal and papers detailing the extent of the miners’ activities. But there is something else on the site, something older than the miners, as old as the rock itself.<\/p>\n

\u201cSoon the archaeologists are coming under assault, from a strange infection that spreads like wildfire through mind and body, one that doctors seem powerless to define let alone control. The survivors only have one option. They must return to the mine, and face what waits for them, down in the deep dark places, where the green meets the black.\u201d<\/p>\n

William Meikle at his best, delivering strong, deftly-written prose entwined with a highly imaginative and richly-detailed mythological plot.
