I don\u2019t do Carnacki pastiches in general, and my \u2018Tales of the Last Edwardian\u2019 series deliberately covers the period after his death, and the period when he was less well known, with the character as an aside or a passing mention.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><em>Lost Cases<\/em> included three pieces by me: i) an introductory story that was, in effect, a really bad joke; ii) \u2018A Dark Trade\u2019, which is canonical and has a very uncomfortable theme beneath it, and iii) a very different tale \u2013 \u2018Grey Dog\u2019. \u2018Grey Dog\u2019 is my quintessential comment on Thomas Merton Carnacki\u2019s life, and may be the only, or one of the only, stories which is entirely from his inner viewpoint. That one, which is in my collection <em>A Persistence of Geraniums<\/em>, has variously been described as \u201cthe best Carnacki story Hope Hodgson never wrote\u201d, \u201ctoo downbeat\u201d, and \u201ctragically sad\u201d. I saw it more as a meditation on life, and simply like its mood.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The story below has all the trappings you\u2019d expect, but takes the Ghost Finder somewhere that ought to make monsters of the Outer Circle seem kind.
