Hurrah, our most boring post yet. No, really.

The eccentricity that is greydogtales has a minor headache, which we shall seek to alleviate by a quick piece in between lurchers and the weird. What do we actually think of the links, writers, artists and works which we mention on the site? It’s probably time to clarify some stuff, which sounds so hideously self-important that it’s why we haven’t done it until now. We usually try not to take ourselves too seriously.

We are a signpost, as Queen Victoria never said. By that, we mean that we often have no real idea if you, as an individual listener, will enjoy the things we mention. We hope that you’ll get something out of it, and we might express an opinion if we really like something we come across, but what do we know?

Tastes vary. Just because you love dogs, you might not like having a lurcher (you should, but that’s not under our control). Similarly, if you like M R James, you may hate a contemporary horror story we mention. And vice versa. Artwork is even worse – we love Art Deco; our editor-in-chief is left icy cold by it. You get the idea.

There are exceptions, of course, where there is no doubt about what your taste should be:

  • Our longdogs – who are utterly brilliant and The Best Dogs in the Universe and can do no wrong, except when they do and drive us mad;
  • Our writing – the fiction of John Linwood Grant has been described in such glowing terms as ‘tolerable’ and ‘better than reading sandpaper’ (Stephen King’s plumber’s sister), so that settles that;
  • Our website – which is, as you know, “the highest-rated site on the Internet that covers both lurchers and weird fiction,” (Arbroath and Smokie Herald).

As greydogtales staggers around the world, we get to know people. That’s nice. People can be fun. Or food. But we also get asked for reviews more often. It seems that we have to do slightly better than just muttering in a corner about this one. Then the headache will go away. So…

Almost a Policy

A signpost says where you can find things, unless you’re in a war movie, in which case it’s been taken down or turned round so that you’re heading straight for the enemy tank column. Feel free to use greydogtales for that (not the enemy tanks ruse, the first bit).

  1. If you’re doing something exciting in the world of lurchers, weird art or fiction, do tell us. Get in touch, send us the gory details. If we also think it’s exciting, we’d like to give you a nod on here. Collaborative would be our middle name, but Linwood is easier to spell. Remember that we’re not cutting-edge, though. Half of our brain cells are still puzzling over the events of 1908. Those Austro-Hungarians are tricky fellows…
  2. If you want to send us a review copy (and people do), that’s cool. We’ll happily read it (or watch it) eventually. We’re old and slow. If we think it’s great, or if it fits a theme we’re into, we’ll cajole you to into coming on one of the broadcasts and maybe doing a full feature or interview. We love introducing our listeners to new weird things. You won’t get a ‘proper’ review out of it though, even if you are utterly brilliant. Not our kettle of ribcages.
  3. If you want us to mention your site, that’s also good. Our Links section really should be larger, and our Weird Media page is desperately in need of completion. The more relevant your site is to our obsessions, the more quickly we’ll get you up there.

The above has been hovering over us for some time. We were impressed by Dawn Cano‘s recent article on Ginger Nuts of Horror (we must stop mentioning them), concerning reviews. It reminded us that we’d better say something ourselves before anyone got the wrong idea about the books we discuss on greydogtales. We don’t critique what we cover, we just signpost it.

If we don’t like what we get, we’ll e-mail you privately and say that it doesn’t quite sit right with us. We’ll even be helpful if we can, but not in public. If we say ‘excellent’ or ‘talented’ in an article, that’s a personal comment. You should judge for yourselves by having a quick look and going “Hmmm.”

The greydogtales Guide to Social Networks

In which we self-destruct and lose all our friends by exposing the truth about social networking.

People often ask about the nature of the greydogtales collective. What’s with this authorial “we”? It would be foolish to expose our entire, multinational staff to public scrutiny. Let’s just say that most of my body cells, some of Django‘s, and our mate Trevor, are crucial elements. The rest of my body cells are in the process of starting a rival blog, tentatively entitled “Why We Hate John Linwood Grant And What We’re Going To Do About It”. My partner hovers in the background, pointing out plot-holes and ludicrous character mistakes, which is what I pay her for.

This would be a good point to have a photograph of a lurcher, a nice dog anecdote and then shut up. Or to muse on what a funny old world it is writing horror, and share an amusing incident. Unfortunately, we like to call a spade a potentially seditious element for use in peasant uprisings, and thus feel bound to tell our listeners what all this Internet stuff is really for.

greydogtales came online last year as a terrifying experiment in how to beat agoraphobia by “getting out there”, but without having to open the front door*. It was an all-or-nothing approach. Full fb exposure, commit to three lively (ha!) blog posts a week, register for Pinterest and then forget why, etc. And we also read somewhere that if you’re going to publish your writing, you need to do this sort of thing. Maybe.

*People also ask how I can be agoraphobic and be out dog-walking. The short answer is that if you have two large, hungry longdogs next to you, you feel somewhat less vulnerable. If the whole world came at me all at once, Chilli would have it on its knees in a millisecond. And then Django would pee on it.

But we had a plan for this article, didn’t we? Let’s have a scientific look at social networking in reality. Here are some of the exciting opportunities which are open to you:

  1. Blogging – what you were thinking about last night after a few beers, which you then decided, for some strange reason, to share with your seven and half followers;
  2. Twitter – what you are thinking about right now, which might have been more interesting if you’d had a few beers before posting it (non-drinkers might substitute extra caffeine);
  3. Facebook – a system created by memes so that they could replicate without human assistance;
  4. Google Plus – a system created by Google so that they could track you down later when they have to ‘adjust’ certain elements of the population;
  5. Reddit – a bulletin-board system for promoting hearsay to the level of Government policy. Or a way to learn about new stuff. We’re not sure;
  6. Insertnamehere – the secret network your children are on because everything above is so last-week and only for old people and nerds;
  7. Pinterest – pictures of cakes.

We’ll now look at two of the most familiar of those in detail, ie sketchily, with no real evidence and in a way which makes people wonder if we’re talking about THEM. Of course we aren’t. We love YOU. It’s the others who puzzle us.

Blogging

Blogging is actually a complex process which allows interesting people to come over as rather dull and rather dull people to sound interesting. For those in between, such as ourselves, it is a stroke of genius. Decades of half-remembered facts, books we once skip-read and whatever magazine is next to the toilet allow us to sound authoritative and well-informed. Suddenly those moth-eaten copies of Smersh the Thunderer in the attic are collector’s gold, to be shown off, and Napoleon’s shoe-size is a gem of arcane knowledge. Blogging justifies an entire life of remembering useless things and forgetting your mother’s birthday and your credit card PIN.

Blogging is also Hard Work. When we started, we looked into the intricate dynamics of which blog posts were read in which hemisphere, when the most shares occurred, what days of the week gave best coverage, how often to post, the prime word-count for a successful post, how to retain readers, how to tag properly and how to optimize for all search engines.

We then entered a lengthy consultation period, and decided, considering all these factors, to shove something out about three times a week, making each post as long as it happened to be. If it’s vaguely relevant, we occasionally ram it onto a Facebook group as well.

It’s important to have a clear focus for your blog, so that readers understand your field of expertise or knowledge. Which is why we cover classic horror authors, weird illustrations, lurchers and other things on a random basis. We want readers who are confused and willing to read anything just to get out of here alive.

It is also essential when you blog to respond to every comment. That’s why people don’t comment – they don’t need more of your dribble. You do, however, hear regularly from Nike Trainers, SEO marketing people and Chinese knock-off sites, so you’re never alone. That’s something.

Facebook

Facebook is still popular, despite absolutely everyone having migrated to Twitter and Insertnamehere. There are many good reasons to be on Facebook. One is that it makes a nice pinging noise when someone likes or comments on your posts. That’s quite fun. Another is that you can trawl frantically through your feed and timeline for what just happened, and manage to lose the one post you were looking for. It’s like a wordsearch, but you don’t have to buy the little books.

However, after considerable effort, you can achieve a list of crucial contacts, which breaks down as follows:

  • People who might be useful to your Grand Plan and help transform you from shoe-shine boy to best-selling author;
  • People who you befriended in case you’re missing out on something, which you always are;
  • Old friends who you hang onto for nostalgic reasons or because you really fancied them twenty years ago (and still do but daren’t tell them);
  • Family members who have hunted you down on-line despite your security measures;
  • People who only befriended you to further their own Grand Plan (losers);
  • People whose work you idolise but who wouldn’t know you from a can of beans and are too busy working to respond;
  • People whose posts worry you so much you keep track of their activity in case you need to ring the CIA very quickly.

If you’re really fortunate, you may also end up with:

  • People you actually like because of who they are and what they post.

We’re not sure about this last category. They sound suspicious as well. What are they trying to sell really? But you’d better not unfriend me. I might still be useful, one day, honest.

Another use for Facebook is to join groups.  These offer a lively and interactive way to get yourself blocked for promoting your own work all the time, or to discuss Napoleon’s shoe-size at length and learnt the name of his cobblers, but only the ones in Toulouse who no-one else knew about. Somewhere in between, we are forced to admit, there are groups which are quite interesting. Most of these don’t want you. Persevere long enough, however, and Facebook will ask if you if you want to create your own group “Things beginning with V which can be found on Latvian bus seats”. And you’ve made it!

(Actually we quite like some of the groups we’re in, but if we printed that, we might have to be more active and read things properly.)

greydogtales is also supposed to be on Twitter, but we can’t face that level of commitment yet without knowing where the relationship might lead. We’ve been hurt in the past.

And there you have it. The wonderful world of social networks. We remember carbon paper and typewriters, you know. And we probably had relatives who fought in the war for the likes of you…

Star Wars Special (but only sort of)

Let’s give a big welcome, dear listeners, to our special guest today, the New Year. So, 2016 (can I call you that?) tell us a bit about yourself. Only three days old, and yet you’re appearing on greydogtales. Are you nervous? We have a mop and bucket in the corner of the studio, don’t worry about that. The linoleum’s washable. You’re feeling shy? Alright, well would you like to hear what’s coming up for you on this site? Tough luck – we’re doing it anyway.

Today we abandon our typical futuristic, cutting-edge approach (such as our examination of 1897 literature and obscure weird writers who were published seventy years ago) to go Star Wars mad. Which is a serious lie. However, we did have to include a ground-breaking review of the latest film, The Force Awakens, by our old friend Simon Ounsley.

Debonair man-about-town, one of the founders of the award-winning speculative magazine Interzone, and prolific fan writer, Simon graciously went to see The Force Awakens for us (but at his own expense). As a result, we can share this incisive post-modern critique with you, rendered directly from the crayon and bubblegum-packet original he handed us.

So I saw ‘Star Wars – The Franchise Awakes’ today and here is my report. Warning – satirically mutated plot spoilers follow.

I was a quivering wreck by the end because it’s about 95% fight scenes and has disappointingly little of the New Age ‘Force be with you’ claptrap that I, and admittedly possibly I alone, had been hoping for. I think it was a mistake for Disney to make it over the Christmas holidays. That meant there were plenty of special effects available on the new computer they got from Santa but the supermarkets were closed so they couldn’t order new plot supplies and had to make do with ones that already been used in the previous movies.

Basically the main thing they had to do was to find Luke Skywalker so he could train a new generation of Jedi Knights to take on UKIP, sorry I mean First Order, the evil force which had arisen from the ashes of Joy Division when their lead singer Darth Vader died (to be replaced in this new movie by Professor Snape from Hogwarts). This meant destroying the brand new iDeathStar 7S by disabling the capacitator and taking down the Maplin website so they couldn’t order a new one. This they managed to do fairly easily – save the ubiquitous Gandalf-style death plunge – which achieved everything they wanted to do except to find Luke Skywalker which was what they wanted to do.

Fortunately the day was saved by the spontaneous regeneration of Skippy The Bush Kanga-r2d2 who was able to report that Luke had fallen down a mineshaft and been sulking there all along. (“What’s that you say, Skippy?” Beep. “The map is on your hard drive?” Beeb beep.) So all’s well that ends well. I think more could have been made of the sub-plot about the awkwardness of making arrangements for Christmas lunch when so many close family members had gone over to the dark side but the movie’s main lesson (in homage to Basil Fawlty) came over clearly enough: when you’re battling an incipient Jedi Knight ‘don’t mention the Force.’

Thank you, Simon Ounsley. We’d certainly pay to see that. If we went to the cinema. If we had any money.

  • Deeper into the comics and graphics novels weirdness – more wondrous Argentinian illustrators, including added Quique Alcatena, and a feature with comics writer, fiction writer and editor Mike Chinn of Starblazer fame.
  • More exclusive interviews – including British artist/writer Andy Paciorek, and starting with a double-feature: authors Clarissa Johal and Anita Stewart talk about their paranormal and horror writing, and women in horror. Or horrible women – something clever like that.
  • Classic authors of the supernatural & strange – this year’s proto-list includes Fitz-James O’Brien, Ambrose Bierce, and the promised H Russell Wakefield piece which never quite seems to get finished.

  • Maybe a site crossover or three – for example, we’re now avid fans of the genial Jim McLeod‘s Ginger Nuts of Horror site, and obviously want to ingratiate ourselves there, like a wrinkled old remora who has found a big, popular shark and is wetting itself with excitement.

  • And themes – we love themes, because they’re extra work and never quite make sense. This year we fancy Nautical Horror, for one – from ghost stories on the high seas to monstrous abyssal creatures. A bit of William Hope Hodgson and H P Lovecraft might also creep into this one. Dagon, french-fries and a nice hot cup of tea – the Innsmouth pensioners’ deal.

Parodies & Possibilities: End of the Year Part the Last

More curiosities arising from this year’s greydogtales articles, some stumbling reflections and a bit of writing news. Oh no, it’s our final End of the Year review. This isn’t a ‘best of’ or self-congratulatory creature. Ideas and connections spark ideas and connections. Something new arose after almost every post, often something more interesting than the original whimsy.

And it is the end of the year as we know it. Except to the many people who have a different one. Some Orthodox Christians celebrate the New Year on 16th January, going by the old Julian character. Our circle of friends in Yorkshire always celebrates the Chinese New Year, which moves about around the end of January and early February. And if you feel daring, the Aztec version starts on 12th March.

We’ll be conventional today and go for the regular one, with a last look at what emerged from greydogtales broadcasts in 2015. We gave the lurchers a good run on here a couple of days ago, so now we go hard-core (ish).

Weird Art was one of our most productive themes in this regard, and it hasn’t finished yet. Every post led to more artists being mentioned, and in some cases suggestions for (or even offers of) further illustrated features. Much to our surprise, we ended up skittering around the UK, the United States, Denmark and Argentina.

John Coulthart raised the name of Santiago Caruso, who produces strange and surreal imagery, some of which has adorned the covers of weird fiction. Caruso has described himself as “a Symbolist, who recreates the deformation of reality that the human being perceives”.

And you might guess that Caruso is Argentinian. It has been a genuine pleasure to conspire with fellow Argentinians and creative friends Sebastian Cabrol and Diego Arandojo during the year, digging deeper into South American weird art.

Following frequent mentions of Quique Alcatena, Diego recently brought another of Alcatena’s works to our attention – Empire of Blood, concerning an alternate British-ruled India. More about this in later posts.

The imagery of folk-horror came to the fore as the year started to close, mostly thanks to the work of Andy Paciorek and other enthusiasts, who are reviving and re-interpreting this area with great vigour.

We don’t usually think that the world needs more genres or sub-genres, but there is something in this one which hangs together, as exemplified in the recent Folk Horror Revival: Field Studies book mentioned here before. If you’re not interested in British countryside weirdness, think Appalachian folk studies or the film “Winter’s Bone” – the brooding darkness of small communities and their secrets.

And what of John Linwood Grant and his misunderstood relative, J Linseed Grant? Well, we have more Good News from the Spiritualist Telegraph to slide in before year’s end. With luck and a following wind, Spring will see the publication of the Tales of the Last Edwardian novella, “A Study in Grey”, as part of 18th Wall’s Science of Detection series.

Put briefly, early on in their new career, Henry Dodgson and Abigail Jessop assist one Captain Redvers Blake in uncovering Edwardian treachery. Oh, and Sherlock Holmes plays his part. It’s been an enjoyable challenge to write a novella which is canonical to both Tales of the Last Edwardian and Conan Doyle’s creation, without compromising or screwing up either. Possibly.

We’re also pleased to confirm that more jlg weird stories will definitely be published on the open market next year, thanks to frenetic anthology and magazine submissions between blog posts. And Sandra’s First Pony, the Enid Blyton/H P Lovecraft crossover by J Linseed Grant, continues unabated, whether people want it or not. Harrumble!

Oh, and on the subject of harrumble, we discovered a new profanity this year – cockwomble. We can see many uses for this in 2016.

Exploring William Hope Hodgson and Carnacki during our Octoberfest, you may remember that we raised the subject of pastiches and parodies, which led to David Langford‘s excellent collection He Do the Time Police in Different Voices. The connection is Dave’s Dagon Smythe stories based loosely on Carnacki. These parodies are witty, intelligent and often quite hilarious, whilst his pastiches can be quite loving, and we recommend them all.

But – the sequel to this is that as a result we went into the Magic Loft and unearthed a treasured copy of John Sladek‘s The Steam-Driven Boy and Other Strangers (1973).

21432612253_e95a175db0The connection is that Sladek includes ten great parodies of classic SFF authors. Thus you can find, between the two volumes, such pleasures as:

  • Three Isaac Asimov parodies – Broot Force by Iclick as-i-move (Sladek), Tales of the Black Scriveners and The Last Robot Story by Is**c As*m*v (Langford).
  • Classics such as The Purloined Butter, purportedly by Poe, H G W*lls story, Pemberly’s Start-Afresh Calliope (both Sladek) and a wonderful G K Chesterton Father Brown parody The Spear of the Sun, by G K Ch*st*rt*n (Langford).

Our favourite from the Sladek volume is the piss-take of Cordwainer Smith, One Damned Thing After Another, but you’d probably have to know Cordwainer Smith’s odd and marvellously different creation, The Instrumentality, to get it. Which comment should lead us on to a celebration of The Instrumentality, but maybe some other time. You can get the Sladek here:

We still have deep love for classic authors, of course, especially the weird or supernatural ones, and so we introduced E G Swain, Sir Andrew Caldecott, William Hope Hodgson (of course), E & H Heron, and Henry S Whitehead, with a smattering of H P Lovecraft and M R James mentions along the way. As this theme continues in 2016, it will be scientifically based on things I find in the loft and stories I can half-remember. From thirty years ago.
